Visit Udawalawe National Park

Whether you’re an avid wildlife enthusiast or a curious traveler, Udawalawe promises an unforgettable experience. Witness the magic of Sri Lanka’s natural wonders in this captivating national park.

History and Creation

Udawalawe National Park is a remarkable sanctuary nestled on the boundary of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces in Sri Lanka. Let’s delve into its fascinating history:

Origins: The park came into existence on June 30, 1972. Its primary purpose was twofold:

  1. Wildlife Sanctuary: To provide a safe haven for wild animals displaced due to the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River.
  2. Catchment Protection: To safeguard the catchment area of the reservoir.

Pre-National Park Era: Before its designation as a national park, this land was used for shifting cultivation (known as chena farming). Gradually, farmers were relocated once the national park status was declared.

Location and Geography

Geographical Diversity: Udawalawe straddles the boundary between Sri Lanka’s wet and dry zones. While plains dominate the topography, there are also pockets of mountainous areas.

Notable Features:

  • Kalthota Range and Diyawini Falls grace the northern part of the park.
  • Bambaragala and Reminikotha outcrops add to its scenic beauty.

Climate and Soil:

  • Rainfall: The park receives an annual rainfall of approximately 1,500 millimeters (mostly during October to January and March to May).
  • Temperature: The average annual temperature hovers around 27–28°C.
  • Soil Types: Well-drained reddish-brown soil dominates, while poorly drained low humic grey soils are found in valley bottoms.

Ecology and Biodiversity

Habitat Diversity:

  • The reservoir’s surroundings include marshes, the Walawe river, its tributaries, forests, and grasslands.
  • Visual Reminders: Dead trees standing in the reservoir serve as reminders of the forest cover before the construction of the Udawalawe Dam.
  • Algae and Grasslands: Green algae like Pediastrum and Scenedesmus, along with blue-green algae species such as Microsystis, thrive here due to former chena farming practices.

Teak Plantation: Beyond the southern boundary, below the dam, lies a plantation of teak—planted even before the park’s official declaration.

Rich Fauna:

  • Mammals: Udawalawe hosts 42 mammal species, including the iconic Sri Lankan elephants, Sri Lankan Sambar Deer, Leopard, and Wild Boar.
  • Birds: A whopping 225 bird species (including 4 endemic birds) call this park home.
  • Reptiles and Amphibians: 26 reptile and 15 amphibian species thrive here.
  • Flora : 09 Endemic Floral Species
