If you need to go close to herds of wild elephants, udawalawe national park is the right place. It is one of the best tourist destinations in Sri Lanka.
This park is well famous for wild elephants watching. Also, you can see water buffalo, wild boar, spotted deer, sambur deer, wild cat, mongooses, foxes, macaque, crocodiles, and many more varies birds and reptiles.
It's located on the boundary of the Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces in Sri Lanka. The national park was created to provide a sanctuary for wildlife expelled by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir on the Walawe River and to protect the catchment area of the reservoir. The reserve covered 30,821 hectares (119.00 sq.m) of land area and was established on 30 June 1972.
The entrance to the park is 12km from the Ratnapura–Hambantota road turn off and 21km from Embilipitiya. Some people take a tour organized by their guesthouse or hotel, but you can arrange a visit by well-experienced tour operators from outside for a low price.
The Udawalawe National Park is home to a variety of mammals, reptiles, birds, and fish.
Glorious elephants, blond leopards, passive water buffaloes, swift deer, and rude crocodiles can all be spotted in the park. You can easily spot flocks of birds of many different species, including eagles, parrots, and herons, elephant bathing, giant cages of eagles as well as the fast running of peacocks.
